To capture that special look, that killer smile, that moment of sadness or wild romance that you are dreaming about. That is the purpose of a portrait. After many years you look at your portrait and remember exactly what went through your mind 10-20-30 years ago.

I love taking portraits outside in the ambient light, or indoors by the candlelight or reflection from a window. It’s so natural and romantic; it shows your inner soul, your inner beauty, everything that you are about. Your eyes sparkle from the flickering candle or from tired sun, settling down over the rainbow.

I find it very interesting and challenging to shoot portraits outside rather than in a studio. What do we usually do in the studio? We use back drops that resembles the blue color of the sky , the turquoise of the sea, or the deep green of trees, or perhaps a canvas like a painting effect to make it look like a classical painting . . . beautiful YES, but somewhat outdated. Now we can do so much more using something as simple as a tree and sunshine. You know that ideally, the most beautiful canvases are those we find in nature!

In the studio we use lights to highlight the hair, just as the sun would, to achieve that natural even skin tone like you would get in the shade or to give your skin that golden glow you get at dawn. Have you ever noticed how sun filters though branches and leaves? What better than to frame yourself with nature’s kaleidoscope blending behind you like a halo, with the gentle breeze blowing in your hair.

So why confine yourself to the studio, to artificial light only? Experiment, enjoy, have fun, face that challenge, find that perfect lighting and that perfect pose.
